Despite a three-hour delay because of last-minute sound checks, Miss Zimbabwe Cape Town 2014 was a great success. Zimbabweans came out in their numbers to support the event, which was held at the Cape Town City Hall on Friday the 5th of September. The pageant was founded in 2012 by the Zimbabwe- born Maynard Chizavare, who says the pegeant is his way of celebrating young Zimbabweans who are working to raise his country’s flag high.
The 22-year-old from Harare was one of the favourite contenders. Primrose is an international relations and public administration final year student at the University of Cape Town. She took the crown and a R5,000 cash prize.
First princess Letwin walked away with R3000, while Ennie as 2nd princess worn R2000. Chizavare said his pegeant gives a platform for Zimbabwean women to “showcase their beauty”. Chizavare used to model and enter beauty pegeants in high school.
The theme for this year’s pegeant was “Empowering The Girl Child” and 11 hopefuls took part in the competition.
The “baby” of the competition, confident 14-year-old Sharon Sasha Dune, was my favourite. Sharon, who lives in Maitland, moved to South Africa two years ago. “I am a bit nervous, but I am confident that I will do well,” she said backstage before the start of the competition. She did not win but she did make it to the Top 6.
Zimbabwean acts entertnained the crowd: From Afro-raggae band Sebede to hip-hop artist Jeskia, who the ladies loved, to The Mind Colony, who were my favourite act of the night because of their neo soul and jazz sound.
The competition was so tough, the panel of judges struggled to pick a Top 5. So they went with a Top 6 instead.
Laurian Nortje, host of SABC 2 youth show Hectic Nine 9 hosted the pageant.
