If spots like Kitcheners and The Bannister Hotel in Braamfontein are your regulars then you’ve probably heard of Avela Qenge, also known as “DJ 50 Shades”. He has also made party revellers jiggy in other known clubs around Johannesburg and Cape Town.
Since graduating from the Soul Candi Institute of Music, DJ 50 shades has been spinning house tunes that have won him fans all over different cities. His mixes which can be described as a mix of Deep Soul, Afro House, Tribal and a bit of electro, fill up the dance floors.
Many will be familiar with his Spanish-inspired single, Sueltalo. You can listen to some of his tunes on his Soundcloud account as well as on the Party42nite website.
Having played with legends like DJ Fresh, DJ Fistaz Mixwell and others, I asked him about his approach to music, “In everything I do, I always strive for quality and perfection. My goal is to unify people of all races, ages, genders and spread love through the music… I live music. I understand music. I love music. I am music.”
On August 29, his birthday week, DJ 50 Shades will release a video for his new track called “New Beginnings” and you get the chance to win double tickets to the launch.
The venue will be Liquid Chefs in Rosebank. The theme is all white everything. And the launch will start at 18:00.
