We’ve all had our social media mishaps. Whether it be pocket tweeting supermodel Jordan Dunn or making a typo. Some mishaps are far worse than others. When you only have 12 followers, nobody will give a fluff about the fluff you tweet. Unfortunately, there are a few obnoxious unlucky people who can’t get away with it.
No man auntie Helen
If you thought Twitter was the only social media site your parents had not ruined, think again. This past weekend, Helen Zille got into a twar (Twitter war) with City Press journalist, Carien du Plessis. For some reason, Helen Zille came across as an angry mom whose public schooled-kid got ‘piemped’ by the prefect and attacked the prefect outside the principal’s office (there’s always that one mom).
Unfortunately, both of them pulled an Alec Baldwin and deleted their tweets. But here’s what they said:
‘@TrendsSthAfrica: #daisajoke is now trending in South Africa http://trendsmap.com/za ” elections war heating up on twitter..’
-Carien du Plessis @carienduplessis
‘@carienduplessis And you, as a reporter, are trending for distorted, inaccurate, biased and unprofessional reporting. Top of the log.’
-Helen Zille @helenzille
Zille, being that auntie, went on by calling out other journalists who also ‘distort’ information.
‘@ShantiAboobaker Yes, Shanti, and you are a close second.’
-Helen Zille @helenzille
Zille later added:
‘@KUBANE She is so terrified that she will be damned by her own complexion that she has to bend over to prove her political correctness.’
-Helen Zille @helenzille
Du Plessis replied when someone asked what she has to say about Zille’s accusations:
“@KUBANE: why are u so quite while @helenzille is saying these lies about you” obviously I disagree, but I prefer to stay out of twars
-Carien du Plessis @carienduplessis
And then Ferial Haffajee responded by saying, and sounding like a passerby who puts the auntie in place for attacking the prefect :
‘Goodness me, what a bad bout of cyber-bullying, @helenzille what’s your mum’s number? I need to have a word.’

One does not simply stimulate debate
tasteless treats
On Tuesday, Charley’s Bakery shared the above picture of their new meme ‘treats’, with the caption ‘Not sure if these are in good taste, but they sure taste good’. The bakery sparked up public debate, like bakeries do, and most of them were negative.
Charley’s later deleted the tweet and apologised by saying:
The #OscarMedia cookies were NOT for sale. Our intention was to stimulate debate as we always do with topical issues in the media — Charly’s Bakery (@charlysbakery) February 25, 2014
Here are a few responses Charley’s received for their infamous tweet.
57 of my tweeple now follow @charlysbakery. There’s no such thing as bad publicity. Well executed PR ploy — Dieter V (@dietsV) February 26, 2014
@charlysbakery A bakery stimulating debate on a murder, using meme’s from the internet? You might want to outsource your social media.
