Although I was just a few minutes late, I felt like beating myself up for missing even the intro of what was going to be one hell of an epic musical experience for me, I have been waiting forever for this day to come. Zonke’s Give and Take Live DVD concert took place at the Lyric Theatre in Johannesburg Friday night at 20:00.
I got there in time to hear here welcome all her guests to her home, “I wanted to be comfortable in my own space” as she pointed out to the stage that was set up to look like a home with a giant window complemented by white curtains, a side table with flowers and some chairs and a piano.
She opened up the show with the title track of her current platinum selling album, Ina Ethe, followed by My Music and Thank You For Loving Me in which she dedicated to the most important people in her live especially her fans and family before she debuted one of her soulful tracks titled Say Now. The crowd loved it as they managed to grasp some of the lyrics and started singing along to the chorus as though they had known the song for a while.
With all her dress changes, clearly mammie doesn’t only have vocal talent but a taste for fashion too as she rocked on stage with a number of jaw dropping dresses, they fit her like a glove. As simple as she was, she still looked fabulous.
“When I put together this album I had hoped to see all these faces before me, just to say ‘hi, I’m Zonke, Thank you so much and I just want to say I really appreciate you’”
I have to say I’m looking forward to buying the DVD, everyone should get a copy, it’s magical, I was dancing from start to finish even leaving the theatre out of breath. It’s a work of art, a lot of storytelling done with passion and love.
Among the audience were her sister Lulu Dikana who is also a singer and Soweto TV station manager Kgomotso Moeketsi and Sony Music Managing Director Sean Watson.
